This lesson is designed for a 4th grade class but this can be used with a 3rd and 5th grade class too. The goal of this lesson is for students to understand their five senses (touch, hear, feel, see, and taste) and use descriptive language to describe the settings in their writings.

Students will be asked to imagine a given prompt setting word. Students will have to imagine what is around them using their five senses. After about a minute, the teacher can show a picture of the setting to help students who need a little bit more help and allow students to compare what they saw in their imagination.

As a group, the class can create a list of things that students saw or imagined using their 5 senses.

With the wooden cabin, talk about why it is important to describe the setting, there can be snow outside or it can be sunny.
