Working With Images

Teachers have a lot of leeway to use copyright-protected material within the four walls of their classroom. It is called Fair Use. More info here. But publishing copyright-protected material on a website is not allowed. This page will help you work with images and other content that is in the Public Domain or allowed for use via Creative Commons Licenses.

Most materials are in the public domain if they were produced before 1923. Content (like photos, posters or films) produced by the US government are in the public domain whenever they were produced.

Great sources for copyright free / public domain images

  • Pixabay – a great collection -with search settings for types / orientations of image. High-quality and sometimes abstract photos. Free to use – credit the photographer.
  • Unsplash – artistic high resolution images. Photographers make available. So you should credit them. Just copy the “say thanks” pop-up and add it to bottom of page.
  • The Noun Project – CC – copyright free icons for everything. Note: you must cite artist.
