Flags and Fractions

Authors: Chloe Mar and Braelyn Higdon

This lesson is for second grade students. This could be used as an activity with students in partners, as a warm up activity, or informal assessment to see where the students are at. The goal of this lesson is to show that the students can identify simple fractions in real life. Students will use flags to investigate the prompts on each slide.

  1. Great idea for integrating some geographical awareness with math. I especially like the Greenland flag question. But why red and not green??

  2. I think this would be a great way to incorporate where students come from too! Then math is relevant to them personally.

  3. This is such a cute idea! So much more exciting than looking at irrelevant pictures in a text book. I like Anna’s idea of using countries relevant to them as well!
